Parent's Guide to Vaccinations

Vaccines are miracles of science used in preventation of illness, at times life theratening diseases or troublesome ones.

Before the immunisation tell your doctor if the Child

Has ever had fits or convulsions

Has had a rection to the last dose.

is unwell in any way


Immunization can be given in the presence of minor illness.

Vaccines have some side effects most of them mild but their benefits far outweigh the potential risks; hence to be used as deemed appropriate.

Injectable Polio Vaccine (IPV)

Very safe. Schedule is of 4 doses similar to DTP triple antigen. High seroconversion rates up to 100%.

Should be used in combination with OPV

In the current scenario, combined OPV and IPV Strives to provide the best of protection without deviating from national immunizatioin policies.

DTwp ( Triple )

Protects against diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus infections.there may be mild fever, pain , redness and swelling at the time of injection. A small painless lump may remain for a few weeks. For fever and pain paracetamol syrup may be given.The dose can be repeated every 4-6 hours if required.

Please consult your doctor if the fever is more than 102 deg. F or if the child suffers from persistent screaming or fits.

DTWP ( Triple/Painless/Feverless )

Costlier cousin of the standard DTWP, avoids the side effects of the same.

Is availabe as combination vaccine with HIB and IPV.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

S. pneumoniae is responsible for almost 15-50% of all community acquired pneumonias. 90 sertypes of s. pneumoniae have been found. Serotypes 1 and 5 cause almost 30% of invasive pneumococcal disease. Serotypes 6,1,19,14,4,5,45,12,7,23 are the most prevalent. Indian data is insufficient.

Two vaccines are available - Typhoid vaccine Two types of vaccines are available Conjugated vaccine- 2 doses will give long term immunity against s. Typhi Polysaccharide vaccine- dose has to given every three years.

Chicken pox vaccine- 2 doses can be started after 1 st birthday and can be given 6 months apart.

Hepatitis A vaccine- to prevent hepatitis caused by infected food and infected water. The vaccine schedule is of 2 doses & can be started after1 st birthday and can be given 6 months apart.

Human papilloma Virus Vaccine

Cervical cancer is 2nd most common cancer in women with approximately 40% incidence. Cervical cancer occurs eary and strikes at the reproductive period of a womans life. HPV is Major cause of cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is the most common cancer/ cause of cancer related death in indian women.

Two vaccines manufactured by recombiant DNA technology. Almost 100% efficacy against vaccine virus strains and 99-100% efficacy vaccine type related genital warts

HPV vaccine is recommended to all females who can afford the vaccine, the vaccine should be given prior to sexual debut.

It is a servical cancer preventing vaccine. Screening programs should containue as per recommendations

Schedule is three doses of 0.5 ml each , intramuscular in deltoid.
